Garments
The design of the outfit is very glamorous and has a quite bold, distictive and traditionally iconic image, representing and symbolizing the key words of modern myth. The bottom of the dress is very flowy, in the breeze, which will compliment the movement of the model and the air like the dresses and wolves clip.
Saloni spring summer - fashion film by Ruth Hogben
http://showstudio.com/project/saloni_spring_summer_2013
This film has some strong effects that we could possibly use to create the same powerful atmosphere.
At the beginning of the film, there is no music just background noise- then the music begins with a strong beat. I feel this is an interesting way to being the film.
The music goes very well with the actions. The model starts off with slow, minimal movements and gradually gets bigger and more exaggerated. the music fits well with this.
The use of camera angles and lighting helps to create a strong atmosphere.
Japanese mythology - concept idea
An old tale from Japanese mythology
Amaterasu
Amaterasu is the goddess of the sun and the heavens. She has a long standing rivalry with her brother, Susanoo, the god of storms and the sea.
After being asked to leave heaven, Susanoo proposed a challenge to prove his sincerity to his sister. They each took an item from each other, Susanoo took Amaterasu's necklace and her, his sword. They birthed god and goddess from each item, Susanoo, 5 men and Amaterasu, 3 women. Claiming the 5 god belonged to her as they were birthed from her necklace. Susanoo caused chaos going on a rampage and killing one of his sisters attendants, Amatrasu rage and grief caused her to hide away inside the 'heavenly rock cave'. hiding the sun for a long time. After being persuaded to leave she banished Susanoo from heaven.
This story is something we could use and loosely base our fashion film on

Consumer Forecast
More consumers are saying they don’t identify with any particular church or religion, but are spiritual in some way.
“The number of people who do not identify with any religion continues to grow at a rapid pace. One-fifth of the public – and a third of adults under 30 – are religiously unaffiliated today, the highest percentages ever in Pew Research Center polling.“In the last five years alone, the unaffiliated have increased from just over 15%.Fictional narratives and myths are being used to explain and develop new ideas for the future.
“One intriguing new way to think about the future is through the concept of ‘design fiction’. This is an approach to design that speculates about new ideas through prototyping and storytelling; thinking very seriously about potential objects. www.slate.com, March 2012
Consumers are in the process of redefining history and spirituality.
In line with this, we see:
- A rise in people who don't believe in a particular faith but do see themselves as spiritual
- A celebration of myths
- Mixed religions
- Myth mixing
- An increased interest in space and space travel
- Designing through fiction
Showstudio fashion story/film: Asian Couture
I think it has an imaginative story behind the creative style, using spiritual depth into art.

Animate Beings
In our brainstorming session we've decided that animals would be a great symbolic feature that we could hopefully add to our film. A black or a white cat, for example, would be perfect along the mystical aura that we would like our film to have. However, if we won't manage to get a real cat, we have some alternatives as well, such as masks. Masks are a actually a great way to picture the Hindu deities mentioned earlier on the blog.
Grimes - Genesis
During one of our group meetings, we also discussed a potential dreamlike approach for our fashion film. I found this Youtube song that would perfectly suit a dreamy, fairytale-like story. The video itself is interesting and different. If you go to minute 4:35, you can see that the girl with long pink dreadlocks looks as if she is strabismic, which I like to connect to the grotesque in romanticism. I also like how the singer dances at 0:48.
Yolandi Visser (Die Antwoord)
I have also chosen Yolandi Visser as a source of inspiration for our fashion film. Yolandi is a singer/rapper in the South African band called Die Antwoord. I think that her sculptural hairstyle, as well as her overall look have a very interesting feel and would fit our concept perfectly.
Here are two music videos of Die Antwoord:

Hindu Deities
I think Hindu mythology is a wonderful source of inspiration for our project. The rich color palette, as well as the stories behind all deities could be a great starting point. Here are some of the most renown Hindu deities.
Ganesha, the god of knowledge, wisdom and wealth. |
Durga, the Mother Goddess. |
Hanuman, symbol of physical strength, perseverance and devotion. |
Kali, the Dark Goddess. |
Krishna, the ninth and the most complete avatar of Vishnu, the Godhead of the Hindu Trinity. |
Vishnu, the peace-loving deity of the Hindu Trinity. |
Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity. |
Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and learning. |
Rama, symbol of chivalry and virtue. |
Shiva, represents death and dissolution. |

Fashion Film inspiration
Pierre Debusschere: The Lake
This fashion film is very effective from the use water splashed in her face through slow motion in film, shows interesting detail. The clouds in the sky blending into her face and the long caped materials movement through the wind, it draws your attention through creativity in ideas.

Everyday items and familiar categories are celebrated and altered, reflecting our fascination with photos and filters. Genres and techniques can be layered up or deleted to create sharply edited shapes and tailored sportswear silhouettes, or unexpected glitch textiles and eclectic styling trends that feel almost accidental. Familiar basics are perfected to produce future classics, and digital effects inspire colour usage and offset prints.
Modern Myth explores the renewed interest in folklore and storytelling by creatives from various countries and cultures. It shows us a contemporary, multi-ethnic world, filled with infinite stories. From movies, videogames and blogs to novels, design and art — the significance of mythological figures, patterns and motifs points towards an expanding global visual culture where designers create richer and more locally relevant products. Industrial Evolution
WGSN states the changing relationship between man and machine takes utilitarian design in an artisan direction. This balances man-made lines and engineered hardware with soft uniform styling and synthetic comfort.
Deliberate cuts and precise folds are offset with rugged molten coatings and rough factory finishes, while future workwear focuses on stripped-back functionality and superhuman technical updates.
